16/07/07 PENZANCE ENJOY WEMBLEY WEEKEND Penzance arrived at Wembley Stadium for the FA Umbro Women's 5s finals and faced opposition with players of premier league experience but claimed two draws and would have won the group with a last match victory but had to settle for third place. Having quickly established themselves as the most noisily supported team at the impressive stadium, with Julie Lawrence becoming the first female footballer to set foot on the new Wembley's turf, Penzance kicked-off against Newcastle United's 'How do you eat yours'. They achieved a goalless draw, with keeper Karly Symons to thank from some smart blocks and saves. Dawn Bateman and Claire Boyd both fired over the top in a game of few chances for the Magpies, but Amber Grose show wide after good work by Lauren Hosking and Julie Lawrence forced a good save with the last effort of the match. Far more chances were created against Peterborough, with Natasha Mills firing too high in the first few seconds. Boyd sliced a shot after good approach work but Julie Lawrence scored the first goal after a corner. But the lead was conceded at a free-kick given away by Grose. Lawrence had a shot well blocked and Boyd was denied, whilst Symons made a good low stop in a game Pennzane should have won but drew one each. The crunch tie came against the group leaders, Docklands, who were from Millwall Lionesses. Both Bateman and Hosking had shots turned out for corners but play was held up for two injuries, the second of which Bateman managed to recover from. Symons saved well before Lawrence was twice denied but Docklands then took the lead and also hit a post as they went on to win 1-0. A semi-final clash with Middlesbrough in the Plate competition maintained hope of some silverware but after important blocks by Becki Lawrence and Symons' outstretched boot, Boro' took the lead with a powerful strike from a corner. The lead was doubled with a tremendous drive from distance. Both Boyd and Julie Lawrence went close, whilst Symons twice saved well. But a third goal came on a quick break, after Lawrence missed the best chance. Middlesbrough had a second player sin-binned in the competition, whilst Boyd grabbed a consolation in a 3-1 loss. Some of the team were later able to meet John Barnes and Trevor Brooking for photos and signatures. Having won her place in the individual national finals, Candice Britten took part in the FA Umbro Fives Challenge. Competing against the clock, she finished sixth out of the nine finalists.
16/07/07 MAGPIES REACH WENDRON SEMIS Penzance Magpies entered the Wendron tournament, where they made it through to the semi-finals, with 2 wins, a draw amongst their four group games. They did open with a 1-0 defeat to Wendron though, the goal coming from their opponents only shot, but bounced back to beat Falmouth Town 2-0, with Amy Hemingway and Sarah Brown the scorers. A goalless draw against Hayle followed, before a 2-0 win overr St.Agnes, where Rose Knuckey scored an oustanding goal in her brace. In the semi-finals they soon went one down to Falmouth 'A', before eventually bowing out of the competition 2-0.

10/07/07 MOSS FARM Penzance made their annual trip to the massive Moss Farm tournament at the weekend, but with a weakened and small squad (including guest keeper, Martha Seymour), drew two and lost three of their group games. But an otherwise enjoyable weekend was marred by vandalism and trouble, with the windscreen of Julie Lawrence's car being smashed. It would seem unlikely that Penzance will return to the event next year. Squad: Seymour, Bateman, B.Lawrence, Pannell-Hitchens, Todd, Fitzgerald, Britten.

18/06/07 PLATE FOR 7s Penzance the won the Plate at the Soccer Nights 7s in Newquay, having missed out on second spot with a 1-0 defeat to Hemel Hempstead Town. The Magpies fielded a young side, especially on the first day, and began with a 5-0 loss to Stratford Town. But they bounced back to win 2-1 against the University of Plymouth, before a controversial 2-1 defeat to Newquay. Hannah Retallack sustained ligament damage from a tackle in the dying seconds and was carried off, Newquay hitting the winner after a hasty resumption of play. The loss to Hemel on the Sunday still left Penzance with a chance of silverware in the Plate, which they won comfortably, with a 5-0 success over University of Plymouth. Penzance Squad: Grace Rudlin, Amy Hemmingway, Emily Hardaker, Kerry-Ann Moxom, Rose Knuckey, Sorcha Dean, Genna Harris, Kim Cook, Charlotte Baines, Rose Pannell-Hitchens, Clare Todd, Hannah Retallack, Claire Boyd, Dawn Bateman, Julie Lawrence.

WEM-B-LEY,
WE'RE THE FAMOUS PENZANCE LADIES
AND WE'RE GOING TO
WEM-B-LEY!
Penzance Ladies will go down in history as one of the first ever women's sides to play at the new Wembley Stadium, after qualifying for the national finals of the FA Umbro 5s. The Magpies reached the July 15th competition climax by winning the South West Region Final at the Goals centre in Plymouth's Central Park on Sunday. The success was achieved through a penalty shoot-out, against Cullompton side, Soccerettes-Kerry. The day had not begun so well, going behind to Dorchester's 'A Team' but Natasha Mills set up Julie Lawrence to level in a 1-1 draw. Yeovil's 'Made in Devon' were up next and the Magpies registered a significant 2-0 win. Karly Symons made some good saves and a vital block before Julie Lawrence scored. Symons turned a shot over the bar with her knee and the points were settled when Clare Boyd slotted home after a free-kick. The group was won when Rolle Rockets were rolled over, 5-0. Mills got the first, Boyd netted with a firm strike and Julie Lawrence claimed a hat-trick, her second a cracking finish. Penzance met Clevedon's 'Bananas' in the quarter-finals, when Lawrence took advantage of a slip-up to intercept a pass and score for a 1-0 result. Plymouth Argyle's 'Four in a Row' were the opponents in the last four, the only goal coming when Julie lawrence used the wall to find Mills, who blasted home. Argyle hit the post and Symons did well to block a free-kick but Plymouth were reduced to four, with a late blue card. In the final, Dawn Bateman saw her drive well saved, Lawrence was denied with another effort and although Symons made two saves, a throw was intercepted and returned with interest to give the Soccerettes the lead. With time running out, Lauren Hosking levelled at the second attempt, with Boyd having a go inbetween. extar-time brought no addition to the score and when it came to spot-kicks, Hosking, Bateman and Boyd all converted successfully. The Soccerettes missed their third and final penalty, as Symons dived to push it over the top to give Penzance a 3-2 penalties victory. There was also a personal success for Candice Britten, who took over 8th spot with her shooting skills in the Umbro 5s Challenge leader board, with the eventual top ten qualifying for Wembley. Penzance are now seeking sponsorship to help with travel and accomodation costs for the Wembley trip. For video footage from Plymouth, click here.

22/12/06 MID-SEASON REVIEW Penzance go into the New Year sitting fourth in the South West Premier, with several games in hand on sides above them. But for two disappointing home defeats, the Magpies would be in a very strong position. The club's resilience has been demonstrated by the recovery from losing around a dozen players from last season's squads and coach Christian Lett is confident silverware will again be won this term. As well as promotion possibilities still very much in focus, there are also three cup competitions to advance in. A profitable FA Cup run is over but included a superb comeback to eliminate senior opposition in Swindon Town.
To say the Reserves have had a mixed first-half of the season, would clearly be an understatement. On top of the squad being decimated, the appointment of new manager, Danny Turner, came too late for the close-season transfer 'merry-go-round'. But after being unable to field a side on a couple of occasions, plus a double-figure defeat, much spirit was shown when only 9 players held Falmouth to extra-time. The team were later to hand-out a couple of thrashings of their own, then finishing the year with an amazing win at previously unbeaten Hayle.

NEW RESERVES MANAGER LOOKS TO FUTURE Having joined the club during pre-season, new Penzance LFC Reserves Manager Danny Turner has his sights set on not only bringing trophies to the club, but also helping to ensure the club's bright future.
After helping Madron Ladies restore their Cornwall League Division 1 status, Danny has clearly set his sights on his next challenge; "My main aim is to progress up the leagues as quickly as possible. As a reserve team, our main job is to bring on players who will then go on to play for the first team, helping them achieve their long-term goals. Getting closer to the first team is the key. At the moment if players do progress, the jump they make in terms of the distance between the leagues is too big, ideally the first and reserve teams should only be one or two leagues apart. To do this, we cant be satisfied with what we'll achieve this year and what we have achieved in the past, we have to set standards and raise the bar as we reach those standards. This is a fresh start as far as I'm concerned and hopefully we can attract players in the process, who have maybe left the club, and even new players."
Danny has also been impressed by the structure of the club and the work that is being done with the younger players. "When I was asked to step in and help, I found it hard to refuse. The ability of the players in both teams will bring success in the near future and hopefully the club now has a conveyer belt which will provide good players in years to come. The commitee helps drive the club forward and now everyone at the club is looking forward to the next few seasons."

MAGPIES' SEVENS HEAVEN Penzance won the ladies 7-a-side competition at Wendron FC's Sharon Wood Tournament on Sunday, Clare Boyd scoring an extra-time goal to defeat Truro City 'B' in the final The semi-final had earlier been delayed when Truro 'A' goalkeeper, Zoe Dyson, sustained a suspected dislocated jaw, taking a thunderous drive from Linda Webb (Penzance) full in the face. With the top two from each group progressing to the last four, the quarter-finals saw Hayle 'A' beat Hayle B, Truro 'B' knocked out Wendron 'A' with a penalty, Truro 'A' had a walkover against Holmans, whilst Penzance put three past Mullion.
