MAGPIES IN SEVENTH HEAVEN
Sunday November 1st 2009:
Cornwall League Shoe Boy Divison 1 Cup 1st Round 1st leg - Penzance 7-1 Marazion
(Britten 3, Lavertu 2, Redd, Whittaker)
Penzance bagged a big 7-1 first leg lead against local rivals Marazion, in the Cornwall Division 1 Shoe Boy Cup quarter-final. Candice Britten struck a hat-trick, before taking over in goal and immediately saving a penalty.
Grace Rudlin made a brave stop early on for the hosts, before Kat Redd twice went close after good work by Alix Lavertu and Katy Whittaker. It was Britten that opened the scoring on 23 minutes, with a simple finish from Lavertu's cross. Redd shot wide with keeper Kirsty Olds stranded and Britten's cross was blocked, with Redd waiting unmarked in the middle.
On 27 minutes, Jezz Forbes levelled, to the delight of the away fans but the hosts put the game to bed with four goals in a 13-minute spell before the break. Firstly, Kat Redd set Lavertu up for a great finish from 22 yards and two minutes later, Katy Whittaker broke clear on the right and Olds couldn't quite push her shot over. Redd hit the roof of the net from Britten's lay off on 44 minutes and right on half-time, Britten herself went through on goal for a cool finish.
Whittaker lashed the ball over after beating the keeper to the ball but the second half was still only 3 minutes old as Nicki Ellis fed Lavertu, to smash the ball home for a tight angle to make it 6-1. Lavertu turned Whittaker's cross just wide under pressure and from a good carly Fitzgerald ball, Redd hit the top of the side netting. The scoring was completed on 55 minutes, when Britten netted with a low drive. Rudlin conceded a penalty for a foul on Forbes but Britten comfortably saved the resultant spot-kick.
Forbes cleared the bar from 20 yards, while for Penzance, Lavertu hit the post, Whiitaker's powerful free-kick was held at the second attempt and from an Ellis' lay-off, Lavertu blasted over. Britten tipped Lynsey Williams' free-kick over, the last real chance seeing Marazion denied by the crossbar.
The second leg will be at Marazion on December 6th.
This Sunday, the Magpies are again at Penlee Park, when they take on Dobwalls in a league fixture, kick-off is 2.30pm. The game will be preceded at noon by the U14s 11-a-side Tesco Cup match.
