MAGPIES SECURE SHOE BOY CUP

Cornwall League Shoe Boy Divison 1 Cup Final - Charlestown 1-2 Penzance (at St.Agnes FC)

Penzance Ladies took on Charlestown for the Cornwall Division 1 Shoe Boy Cup at St.Agnes FC, having twice lost 5-0 to the league champions this season. But with a full eleven, the Magpies came through 2-1, despite a couple of scares with goals disallowed.
The first of these came just 3 minutes in, when a corner was turned in at the far post but ruled out. When Kat Redd broke through the middle for the first time, she had two shots charged down. Tyler Matthews made a good block at the other end with Charlestown firing just over. Alix Lavertu also broke into the box but the keeper blocked her effort. Redd played a good give and go with Sorcha Dean but shot wide of the far post. Candice Britten in the Magpies goal had to twice divert the ball away from danger with an outstretched boot, Matthews also putting in a crucial tackle.
Charlestown went ahead on 33 minutes, with a corner forced in at the far post by Jody Bray. But it was only 7 minutes later that the scores were level again, Redd receiving a through ball and tucking it under the outrushing keeper. Redd so nearly gave Penzance a half-time lead, again battling through the heart of the defence but the keeper made a great save.
The champions had the first good chance of the second-half, after bypassing three players, a forward shot but Britten parried. The decisive goal came with over 30 minutes still to play, a superb inswinging corner from Katy Whittaker smartly tucked away at the far post by Nicki Ellis. The captain almost had another but fired wide after beating a defender. Lavertu drilled wide after a good move down the left, Redd also missed the target after a long drop-kick was headed through. Some nervous moments towards the end followed but Grace Rudlin made an excellent tackle on the edge of the box and an effort from the left went right across an open goalmouth. Britten claimed a high ball at the second attempt, despite a real scramble and mayhem in the six-yard box finally saw the ball poked home, sparking wild celebrations from Charlestown, until it was chalked off as the ball had gone out of play in the build up. Having come through the thrills and spills successfully, the cup was won, with a third trophy still up for grabs.
The Magpies complete their fixtures on Sunday, with the St.Austell Trophies League Cup final, in which they face St.Agnes at Hayle FC, 2.30pm.
