MAGPIES LOSE TITLE SIX-POINTER

Sunday April 11th 2010:Cornwall League Division 1 - Charlestown 5-0 Penzance

Penzance Ladies visited Cornwall League leaders Charlestown and were beaten 5-0, with the side soon reduced to ten players, Leanne Harvey being unable to continue. It was a disappointing way to effectively concede the title, not aided of course by Thursday night's extra-time exertions. However, just a point at home to local rivals Marazion on Thursday (April 15th) will secure the runners-up spot at the first attempt.
Charlestown were ahead on 7 minutes, after a fumble by Grace Rudlin, with the hosts adding two more goals in the first quarter. Rudlin made some good saves and a shot by Candice Britten was saved easily.
The second half saw Penzance playing better and Kat Redd was getting in some runs down the left wing and one ball to Britten just missed the target. A shot by Nicki Ellis was and an open goal wasn't taken advantage of. Redd fired straight at the keeper, while Charlestown hit the woodwork but the follow up resulted in goal number four. The champions elect added a fifth goal but Penzance were still battling on right to the end.
Rudlin worked very hard particularly in the second half and with only ten players for most of the game, they did make a big effort in the second half but had too big a hill to climb.
The Magpies next face home and away games with Marazion, firstly on Thursday April 15th, 8pm at Penzance FC, then on Sunday April 18th, in the St.Austell Trophies Cup semi-final, 2.30pm at Trevenner.
