MAGPIES OVERCOME OBSTACLES
Sunday September 27th 2009
Sunday : Cornwall League Division 1 - St.Agnes 1-3 Penzance
(Bytheway, Ellis, OG)
Penzance overcame a number of obstacles to win 3-1 at St.Agnes and climb to fourth in the Cornwall Division 1, with a game in hand on most.
The Magpies had four regulars missing, including their keeper, their topscorer covered in goal, with only 10 fielded in total, which was down to 9 for the last 10 minutes.
One of three debutees, Kerry Bytheway, took just 10 minutes to open her account. After many chances came and went for the visitors, Nicki Ellis eventually hit a cracking second on 76 minutes. It was her cross that was later deflected in for a third, the hosts then netting a consolation.
As with Bytheway, Kerry Matthews and Charlie Gardner also fitted in very well in their first game. Becki Lawrence and Dawn Bateman were outstanding in defence, also Ellis in midfield, while stand-in keeper Candice Britten made one spectacular save, with the ball headed for the top corner.
The Magpies are without a game this Sunday and are next in action on October 11th, away to Dobwalls in the League Cup.
Penzance: Britten; C.Fitzgerald, Lawrence, T.Matthews, Bateman; Gardner, Ellis, K.Matthews. Redd; Bytheway.
The Junior Magpies U15s have withdrawn from the East Cornwall Youth League, due to having too few players now available. The U14s are away to Truro City at Penair School this Sunday.
