MAPGIES WITHIN REACH OF LEADERS
Sunday March 21st 2010: Cornwall League Division 1 - St.Breward 2-6 Penzance
(Lavertu 2, Harvey, Bateman, Britten, Redd)
Penzance Ladies hit St.Breward for six, as they closed in on leaders Charlestown, who were beaten at Dobwalls. Overcoming a first-half playing up the hill with just 10 players, the Magpies built up a 4-1 lead. After a deflected first goal, Dawn Bateman netted the second, when coming forward for a corner. The hosts pulled a goal back but Alix Lavertu turned in a free-kick by Tyler Matthews, before adding a cracking fourth.
Bateman cleared off the line in the second-half but the lead was increased with a team goal, the move capped by Candice Britten's finish. St.Breward added a second goal, before Kat Redd completed the scoring at the second attempt, for a 6-2 Penzance victory. The Magpies are now two points behind the leaders (whom they visit on April 11th), with a game in hand.
There are two opportunities to see the silverware-seeking side at Penlee Park this week, as they now host Truro City on Thursday (March 25th) at 8pm, in the St.Austell Trophies Cup quarter-final, before a crucial Cornwall League match this Sunday against Dobwalls, 2.30pm.
