DRAB DOBWALLS DEFEAT FOR MAGPIES
Sunday November 8th 2009: Friendly - Penzance 1-3 Dobwalls
(Britten 76)
With the scheduled referee employed elsewhere, Penzance's important league clash with Dobwalls was reduced to the status of a friendly. The disappointment showed, particularly in a stagnant first half, in which Leanne Harvey went closest, cleverly evading a challenge to immediately fire just wide of the far post.
Player positions were repeatedly juggled and the opening goal came early in the second-half, with a fine finish from the corner of the area, after Tyler Matthews misjudged the bounce. Candice Britten threatened on a number of occasions, having finally resumed her striker's role for the last quarter. Britten was narrowly side seconds after going up front and then shot at the keeper when clean through, with Harvey also denied from the follow up. Nicki Ellis and Harvey combined well to set up Britten, who whipped a 20-yard effort against the angle. An effort from Ellis dropped narrowly over from Kat Redd's cross and Britten's bullet from Katy Whitaker's corner struck a defender on the head. But Dobwalls doubled their lead midway through the half, when possession was conceded and struck a great goal seconds later, from 25 yards. Some consolation arrived late on, as Britten bundled in Whitaker's looping cross.
Penzance are without a game this Sunday, due to a bye in the County Cup. They next have a crucial top of the table clash away to Charlestown at Sticker FC on February 22nd.
