MAGPIES CRASH TO CHARLESTOWN'S CLINCIAL FINISHING
Sunday September 13th 2009:
Cornwall League Division 1 - Penzance 0-5 Charlestown
Penzance crashed 5-0 at home to Charlestown in Cornwall League Division 1, a result which reflected the visitors' more clinical finishing, in a game that the Magpies had just as many chance, despite fielding only ten players.
Having started well, Penzance paid for losing possession on 8 minutes, as Charlestown finished smartly from 20 yards. The scores might have been level again on 14 minutes, as Candice Britten won a penalty, but her spot-kick was saved. Four minutes later it was 2-0, with an unstoppable shot over the keeper. Leanne Harvey shot wide when put clean through and when Tyler Matthews played Britten in, her effort just cleared the bar.
After the break, Britten fired wide when in the clear and her free-kick was then volleyed off-target by Harvey, before keeper Grace Rudlin got behind an awkward low shot. But a tidy finish from an acute angle made it 3-0 on 55 minutes and on 66 minutes, a clearance was returned with interest into an unguarded net. Britten broke through on the left but was denied again, while Rudlin made a fine save, turning a drive onto the bar. The scoring was completed on 78 minutes, further proof that it was just not the Magpies' day came when Kat Redd struck the post and also forced an excellent save from Abbie Prosser, while Britten failed to convert in another one-on one with the keeper.
The Magpies are home again this Sunday, as they take on St,Breward at Penzance FC, kick-off 2.30pm. Training is now at Marazion FC on Thursdays (7pm) and new players are welcome - call 01736 874689.
