MAGPIES MAGNIFICENT IN THE MUD

Sunday March 28th 2010 : Cornwall League Division 1 - Penzance 3-0 Dobwalls

(Britten 20, Dean 76, 90)

Penzance Ladies ran out 3-0 winners over third-placed Dobwalls at Penlee Park, Sorcha Dean adding a late brace to Candice Britten's opener. Playing with the now almost obligatory ten players, they overcame the heavy conditions to defeat their visitors, who travelled with the luxury of four substitutes.
Britten was first to close from 25 yards, as Alix Lavertu and Katy Whittaker combined well to set up the shot. Grace Rudlin made a smart stop from a powerful strike but Penzance went ahead on 20 minutes, as Lavertu played in Britten, whose strong drive went in off the bar. Lavertu almost got on the scoresheet herself but having sidestepped the defender, her strong shot just cleared the angle. Lavertu also drilled a shot across the face of goal, while at the other end, Tyler Matthews made a great interception on the edge of the box.
The home goal survived as Rudlin turned an effort round the post and the resulting corner was cleared off the line, while Carly Fitzgerald intercepted a close range effort. Lavertu's powerful drive was well parried and Nicki Ellis's effort beat the keeper and slipped across an open goalmouth. From a short corner, Lavertu glanced a header wide, while Dobwalls missed a good chance too, heading back across goal.
A second goal was always required and in came 12 minutes from time, Britten's perfectly weighted cross was matched by Sorcha Dean's header. A strong run from Britten saw her come through two tough tackles but the shot was gathered easily. The third goal came in the last minute in farcical fashion, as the keeper failed to collect the ball, allowing Dean to poke it past her and stroll it over the line.
The Magpies attempt to stage their St.Austell Trophies Cup quarter-final with Truro City on Thursday (March 31st) at 8pm.
Penzance: Rudlin; C.Fitzgerald, Matthews, Bateman; Whittaker, A.Ellis, N.Ellis, Lavertu; Dean, Britten.
