MAGPIES MAKE IT FOUR IN A ROW
Sunday October 25th 2009: Cornwall League Division 1 - Penzance 2-1 Hayle
(Harvey, Redd)
Penzance made it four league wins in a row, with a close 2-1 victory over Hayle at Penlee Park. There was early pressure from the visitors but Lindsey Meyers' shot was an easy save for Grace Rudlin. Kat Redd and Alix Lavertu worked well together in the Magpies' midfield, Redd made a few good breaks down the wing, debutee Lavertu was wide with a couple of chances. Gemma Saunders played well for Hayle and a good shot at goal was saved by Rudlin, who was kept busy. Penzance took a 20th minute lead, Katie Whittaker's corner finding Leanne Harvey, who took full advantage of the keeper being off her line.
Early in the second half, another shot at goal from Saunders was intercepted by Becki Lawrence. Nicky Ellis produced a good shot on target and Redd followed up to double the lead.
Hayle put Penzance under quite a lot of pressure in the second half and Leanne Gilbert fired a great shot against the bar. A few minutes later, a handball decision was given against Lawrence and Tanya Wells converted the penalty to make it 2-1. Hayle worked very hard for an equaliser but the Magpies survived a few free-kicks against them, with Rudlin saving one effort after she was penalised for carrying the ball out of her area. Shortly after that, the whistle went for full-time and the Magpies' steady rise up the table continued.
This Sunday, the Magpies are again at Penlee Park, when they take on Marazion in the Division 1 Shoe Boy Cup quarter-final 1st leg, kick-off is 2.30pm.
