Britten's four floors Blazey

Sunday January 24th: Cornwall League Division 1 - Penzance 7-1 St.Blazey

A minute's silence was observed before the match, in memory of 16 year-old Rosie Howis. Penzance Ladies' first home game of the year, saw them complete a league double over St.Blazey, with a 7-1 victory at Penlee Park.
katy Whittaker opened the scoring on 10 minutes, after a fumble by the keeper. But a good save was made to deny Candice Britten, following a sweeping move and pass from Leanne Harvey. Tyler Matthews overcame two challenges to find Alix Lavertu and she fired a shot just over the angle. The visitors were unlucky not to level, with a powerful 25-yarder that crashed against the post but Penzance doubled their lead on 25 minutes, as Britten forced in a Nicki Ellis cross. Good work by Carly Fitzgerald denied St.Blazey a clear chance, before the Magpies struck twice more for a 4-1 half-time lead. On 34 minutes, Lavertu broke into the box and her low drive was well saved but Whittaker was on hand to finish. Two minutes before the break, Britten rounded the keeper to cap a good move.
St.Blazey pulled a goal back 8 minutes after the restart, firing across keeper Grace Rudlin into the far corner. But it was 5-1 just 3 minutes later, Britten cutting in from the left to fire home her hat-trick goal. Lavertu's smart header from Britten's cross was well saved but on the hour, Nicki Ellis picked put Lavertu to finish from 18 yards. Britten went close after Dawn Bateman and Harvey combined well. before completing the scoring on 70 minutes. There was another chance for Britten from another good move but the keeper made the block.
The Magpies go to Hayle for a Cornwall Division 1 fixture on Sunday, just a fortnight after the 5-1 county cup win there. Kick-off at Hayle FC is 2,30pm.
Meanwhile, in the draw for the Cornwall Cup quarter-finals, Penzance were given a trip to Truro City on February 21st. The fixture will be repeated a fortnight later, when the two sides meet there in the League Cup quarter-finals.
