BRITTEN BAGS BRACE AS MAGPIES BOUNCE BACK
Sunday September 20th 2009:
Cornwall League Division 1 - Penzance 4-1 St.Breward
(Britten 2, G.Fitzgerald pen, Whittaker)
Penzance put last week's 5-0 defeat well behind them, as they bounced back to come from behind and beat St.Breward 4-1 and the margin of victory could have been greater.
Nicki Ellis, Candice Britten and Katy Whittaker all went close, before the visitors took a 17th minute lead. Grace Rudlin had made a brave challenge but the follow-up shot from 20 yards beat her. But just 2 minutes later, Carly Fitzgerald's volley was tipped over for a corner that led to a penalty for handball, which Gemma Fitzgerald converted comfortably. Kat Redd, Ellis and Britten all threatened to put the Magpies ahead before the break, Whittaker going closest as she struck the angle.
The lead was eventually gained 12 minutes after the restart, as Ellis led a breakaway move and found Britten, who fired home inside the near post. St.Breward missed a clear chance and Britten was then cautioned, along with her marker, after a tussle. Ellis rattled the bar from 30 yards but two goals followed in the last 10 minutes, to confirm victory. Britten lofted in the first from 20 yards and went close again but a fine move ended with the keeper taking her shot in the face. Ellis and Leanne Harvey had efforts blocked but it was Whittaker who blasted home the rebound from a tight angle.
