MAGPIES RESIST AGGIE FIGHBACK

Sunday May 16th: Cornwall League St.Austell Trophies Cup Final - St.Agnes 2-4 Penzance

(Dean 5, Britten 7, Bateman 30, N.Ellis 88)

Penzance lifted a third trophy of the season, with a 4-2 win over a battling St.Agnes side, in front of a very vocal crowd at Hayle FC. After last week adding the Cornwall League Shoe Boy Division 1 Cup to their runners-up trophy, Penzance eventually saw off St.Agnes to lift the St.Austell Trophies League Cup.
Having recently struggled to defeat the Saints, the Magpies got off to the best possible start, storming into a 2-0 lead after 7 minutes. Both came via Nicki Ellis free-kicks, the first on 5 minutes saw Sorcha Dean eventually score, after a scramble in which she, Candice Britten and Alix Lavertu all had shots charged down. Two minutes later, Britten chased a ball over the top and under pressure fired a fine strike into the roof of the net.
Britten had an effort cleared off the line and an outrageous backheel parried away, Nicki Ellis had a goal ruled out for offside and also headed against the post.
After 30 minutes, Dawn Bateman hooked in a third from a Katy Whittaker corner but 3 minutes later, a fine shot on the turn from St.Agnes forward Tracie Burley, nestled in the corner of the net.
Burley went close either side of the interval but the fightback was really on as Grace Rudlin conceded a 55th-minute penalty and Burley tucked it away confidently. It then took the sharpest of tip-overs from Rudlin to deny Burley a hat-trick.
Kat Redd went close with a header for the Magpies, and when Britten who had suffered a couple of hefty knocks. lifted the ball over the keeper and bar, custodian Julie Windram came off worse in the collision.
With the Magpies defence having to keep on their toes, the game remained in the balance until 2 minutes from time. Windram fumbled something of a 'yorker' from Lavertu's free-kick and Nicki Ellis was quick to force the loose ball home and collect the League Cup.
The Magpies compete in their first summer tournament this weekend, with two full days of football at the UK Sevens in Newquay. The tournament venue is The Paddock, on Trencreek Road.
Meanwhile, the U12s have a friendly away to Liskeard.
