LAVERTU TREBLE SENDS MAGPIES INTO FINAL

Sunday April 18th: Cornwall League St.Austell Trophies Cup semi-final - Marazion 2-5 Penzance

(Lavertu 3, Whittaker, Britten)

Penzance gained swift revenge for their midweek league defeat by Marazion, coming from behind to win the St.Austell Trophies Cup semi-final 5-2 and set up a final with St.Agnes.
The Magpies enjoyed much of the play in the first-half, Candice Britten twice shot at keeper Kirsty Olds and just cleared the bar, after Alix Lavertu and Sorcha Dean combined well. Grace Rudlin caught a Carly Jacka shot over her head and raced out to make a great tackle on the speedy Jazz Forbes. Britten won a penalty when pulled down in the box but Olds kept it out and Penzance were soon made to pay as after 37 minutes Forbes hit the post and from the rebound, Linzi Williams fired powerfully over Rudlin into the net. But 3 minutes later, Nicki Ellis crossed into the left-hand corner of the box, where Lavertu controlled the ball and finished well.
Marazion regained the lead 5 minutes after the restart, with a lob over the out-rushing Rudlin but the visitors hit back with four goals in the last 20 minutes. Dawn Bateman sent Britten away, taking the ball into the box, she found Katy Whittaker who levelled it at 2-2. Britten had a first-time shot well gathered but on 75 minutes bundled in a Tyler Matthews free-kick. Marazion lost Jacka after a challenge with Matthews. Nicki Ellis had a shot also well saved and Britten wasted a good chance, then with 3 minutes left, Bateman fed Lavertu, who turned and fired home from the edge of the box. Lavertu finished strongly, also finding the side-netting, before completing her hat-trick in the last minute.
Penzance: Rudlin; Bateman, Matthews, C.Fitzgerald; N.Ellis, Whittaker, A.Ellis, Rudge, Lavertu; Britten, Dean.
